How Advanced Technology in Portfolio Risk Analytics and Daily Performance Reporting Capabilities Can Bring your Parish into the 21st Century
Joe Matthews and Rebecca Brooks
Technology makes our lives easier. We use Apps to find a taxi, order dinner, access our bank accounts, and order movie tickets. We use the term “Smartphone” for many reasons. Technology makes us more efficient and smarter. So why aren’t Churches being smarter when it comes to their investments and technology? Many Churches wait until the end of the month or the quarter to view their investment account performance if their portfolio is part of a pooled investment fund.

Big data analytics solve for reporting challenges many Parishes face and help Fiduciaries understand portfolio risk. In 2018, Morgan Stanley integrated BlackRock’s Aladdin technology into its wealth management platform. This technology helps identify outliers to a Church’s risk appetite by measuring up to 2,200 portfolio risk factors. In conjunction with Addepar, Morgan Stanley can address the reporting needs of your Church’s performance reporting requirements both in pooled funds as well as sub accounts.

This interactive discussion will address the key challenges that investment committee members face and present possible solutions for more effective investment portfolio outcomes. Our discussion will be facilitated by Rebecca Brooks, Joseph Matthews, and Amy Mooney from Morgan Stanley Wealth Management who will be joined by Tom Kaiser from BlackRock and Alana Weiss from Addepar.

The goal of this workshop is to help leaders and members of investment and finance committees, vestry members and wardens become better educated and made aware of advances in Technology for Investment Reporting and Risk Analytics.

How to Expand your Mission from an Outsider's Perspective
Mark Meyer
Mark was introduced to the Episcopal Church as an outsider coming in to observe, listen and engage with 88 parishes across the Episcopal Diocese of Washington DC as they talked through the challenges, strengths and potential vision for the region early in 2019. He has now worked onsite with four different parishes there and continues to engage with their next steps towards health in that region. Sometimes we can simply be too close to our own reality and need an outside perspective. What does it mean to be outside focused? How do we grow the parish in our ever changing culture? In this session, Mark will walk through his experiences as an outsider, learnings and key next steps that can be taken to help your parish expand its mission as part of the Jesus Movement. Presented by The Unstuck GroupLunch Plus Track

Moving from from Good to Great - Preachers Learning from Their Congregations
The Rev. Dr. Stephen Smith, the Rev. Nathan Kirkpatrick, and Lisa Cressman
Strong preaching has been documented by Gallup and The Pew Center to be the single most important driver of church membership and weekly attendance. It’s no surprise that preaching skills also show up near or at the top of new rector call criteria, making preaching chops a significant factor in clergy careers. Yet no formal framework exists for providing feedback to clergy on their preaching. Even when the Bishop visits, she does not hear the Rector preach since she will most likely be preaching herself. This program will review a framework for communicating appreciative and critical feedback regularly to the preacher through small groups, in a self-sustaining process that any parish can model. It takes a team to mentor the preacher along the road to realizing his or her full potential in the pulpit.Presented by Episcopal Preaching FoundationLunch Plus Track
Opening Doors to Renewal by Engaging Community at St. Paul's, Syracuse
Rebecca Livengood
Partners will be joined by leaders from St. Paul's in downtown Syracuse to tell an inspiring story of parish-community collaboration. St. Paul's adopted a bold, innovative approach to renewing its historic parish house as an asset in the midst of burgeoning neighborhood investment. This session will describe how the parish told its story, invited community leaders into conversation and partnership, and worked with architects to envision new uses for the building that is leading to new funding and support. Prepare for Tomorrow’s Volatility Today --- Managing Investment Risk
Kevin Callahan and Sonia Kowal
The time to think about risk is now. The stock market has had a great run over the past 10 years, and you want to protect those gains. What should you do? What should you consider? We’ll discuss how to manage stock market volatility by incorporating downside protection into your endowment’s investment portfolio. As prudent investors, it is important to consider different sources of investment risk, including risk from ESG factors, but also specific issues pertaining to your endowment such as distribution requirements and risk tolerances.Presented by Zevin Asset ManagementLunch Plus Track
Strengthening Leaders for a Changing Church: Adaptive Changes in Theological Education from Seminary of the Southwest
Leadership for a changing Church requires new strategies and practices for theological education and Christian formation. This luncheon presentation will identify a number of ways Seminary of the Southwest and its Iona Center programs have embraced the adaptive change process and are responding to this shifting landscape by training and strengthening leaders on the Church’s frontier. CEEP members will hear how their staff colleagues and parishioners can actively participate in new forms of theological education accessible through technology beyond the walls of the Seminary. These opportunities include distance learning in accredited CPE or pastoral care courses for youth ministers, Christian educators, and lay pastoral care leaders, as well as an extensive online video collection of Christian formation materials designed specifically for use in congregations and church leadership groups. Building on last year’s CEEP presentation on bi-vocational ministry by the Rt. Rev. Mark Edington, CEEP members will also hear a compelling vision about the crucial role they can play in raising up highly qualified people to be trained locally in their dioceses for leadership and ordination in the changing Church. Presented by Iona Center - Seminary of the SouthwestLunch Plus Track

What happens after the Campaign?
A capital campaign is a significant, and spiritual journey, for a parish to embark on. From the planning study to the final dollar collected on your pledges, this commitment requires years of work. But what really happens when the official campaign ends? Through a moderated panel discussion with Rectors and Parish Administrators we will explore how parishes transitioned from the successful campaigns to implementing their Campaign Continuation Committees, overseeing pledge collection plans, and how they continued to keep campaign volunteers engaged in active ministry and outreach.

Walk away with new ideas and thinking around:

1. Understanding the stories and statistics for campaign success.
2. Practices ensuring annual giving remains stable and grows during a campaign.
3. Outlining how volunteer leaders support the campaign through stewardship after the goal has been secured.

What IS an Episcopalian in Good Standing? And who cares?
Lisa Kimball, PhD
The canons to parochial reports and other metrics can limit our imagination and obscure what really matters about being church. Blending new research, Episcopal tradition, and the Way of Love, Lisa Kimball, Ph.D., will make a compelling case for a growing church that defines “good standing” in very different ways than the going church of the past. Holy Eucharist

Sunday, January 24, 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Worship in the Episcopal Church rests on scripture and the traditions of the elegant language of the Book of Common Prayer. While the worship might seem more formal than spontaneous, we reliably read scripture every time we worship together, and we follow the liturgy that has stood the test of time. Our worship is in letting the liturgy carry us along into a deeper spiritual awareness and connection with God.
